NATIONAL GRANT AWARDED

State Street Church, United Church of Christ, has qualified for a $420,000 grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places, a program of Partners for Sacred Places in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  One of 30 congregations (from a field of over 300) to share $8.73 million in funding, State Street Church will use the funds to repair and restore its 1893 John Calvin Stevens facade and towers.  Since before the Civil War, the congregation of State Street Church has been an active part of the Portland community and currently shares its building with several non-profits as well as a clothing ministry and a winter family shelter.

Our Presence and Mission

Approaching our 175th anniversary, the stunning State Street Church building is representative of Portland Maine’s history of resiliency and the community’s drive to provide a safe space for humans in need.

Originally constructed in 1852, State Street Church commissioned a new facade designed by John Calvin Stevens in 1892.  In 1923, in order to better serve the community, a large annex of community meeting spaces and offices was added.  In the 1940s and 50s, the Connick stained glass windows were added and the sanctuary redesigned.  The Chapel Hall part of the Annex was restored in 2014.

In 2024, to help ensure that State Street Church will remain safe and welcoming, the congregation has embarked on a journey to preserve this stunning structure;  housing its faith and social justice missions for years to come.
